Entrepreneurial Challenge Sparks Media Interest in Tracesmart

Tracesmart has received attention from the national press following their MD’s entry into the Bank of Scotland Corporate £35 Million Entrepreneur Challenge.

Tracesmart, renowned for providing online people tracing, anti-money-laundering and know your customer (KYC) services, has recently received major interest from the national press. Having entered the South West England and Wales regional heat of the Bank of Scotland Corporate Entrepreneur Challenge, the story of Tracesmart’s Managing Director and founder, Mike Trezise, caught the attention of the Sunday Times.

The Bank of Scotland Corporate Entrepreneur Challenge is comprised of several regional heats and receives entries from all over Great Britain. Each regional winner will receive the prize of a loan up to the value of £5 million interest free and be eligible for entry into the national final in which they could win the coveted title of “Bank of Scotland Corporate Entrepreneur of the Year”.

Bigmouthmedia Sounds Cautious Welcome To The Google About-Turn On Paid Search Advertising For Gambling Websites In The UK

Bigmouthmedia has sounded a cautious welcome to the news that Google is set to make a dramatic u-turn tomorrow when it lifts its ban on paid search advertising for gambling websites in the UK.

The decision, which overturns the search giant’s policy of refusing to carry AdWords advertisements for gambling operations such as online bingo and casino sites, is expected to presage an online gold rush as bidders hurry to tap into a potentially lucrative new sales vertical.

In addition to opening up a new keywords bidding war, the move could also have a substantial impact on Yahoo. The search engine has until now profited from the PPC revenue from gambling advertisers barred from using Google, but with the field now open stands to lose a considerable chunk of its turnover.

“This is another sudden change that has taken most of the sector by surprise. It will certainly lead to a big switch in the way that advertisers and agencies manage search engine optimisation campaigns for gambling sector clients and opens up a potentially lucrative new vertical for the industry,” said Lyndsay Menzies, Managing Director of bigmouthmedia UK.

She continued, “While many will welcome the addition of a new and highly competitive advertising platform for gambling advertisers, it remains to be seen what impact the move will have on other services. Competition is good for business, and it would be a great shame if this were to further weaken Yahoo’s hold on the market.”

When it first introduced the ban 16 months ago, Google was heavily criticised by gaming and gambling companies for not providing them with evidence that its users wanted the ban. The company, which claims that the change has been under review for some time, says that it consulted the Gambling Commission prior to changing its policy.

Online People Search Provider Improves Customer Service Following OSIS License

Tracesmart, a major leader in online electoral roll search facilities, announced they have been granted the licence to hold the directory enquires database in house and have fully integrated it into their services. The database, also known as OSIS, has already been incorporated into their online people search facility and is housed within their secure data centre. The list contains all listed telephone numbers in the UK and will improve the speed at which people can obtain telephone numbers for a missing person such as a lost friends or relatives.

Previously British Telecomm was the only organisation to hold a database of phone listings, with the exception of other licensed phone operators. This meant that many residential numbers were being left out, and as a result it was decided that changes were needed. In 1999 a subdivision of BT, The Directory Solutions Unit (DSU) was set up as an independent body to oversee the collection of listings from numerous sources including BT, cable companies and mobile phone providers. To date the DSU oversee OSIS and provide database licence holders a daily file update of between 30,000-100,000 new, deleted or amended records.

This daily update of OSIS information means that the Tracesmart system will have improved performance – as such telephone listings offered to Tracesmart’s customers carrying out an address search will be guaranteed. Paul Weathersby, Tracesmart’s Technical Director commented, ‘Following an in-depth security audit, which ensured our systems were strong and secure enough to hold this type of data, we are delighted to now be granted direct access to the OSIS data.’

Take11 provides a web service for online cataloging of videos and dvds

Every technology has limitations and drawbacks. In the case of home entertainment systems, a drawback is the need to organize and manage a collection of videos and dvds. Even when many videos are borrowed, rather than owned, we’d like to be able to track what we’ve seen, make a wish list, assign our own ratings, and create notes about particular movies. Ever stand in a video store with dvd in hand and wonder whether you already own that particular title?

The solution is a system for cataloging—but the system must be easy to use; that is, it must take advantage of what we already know. Software developers Mitch and Jim Haileare creating such a system—a web site called Take11.com where users can catalog their video collections.

Take11 is a web service: there is no software to buy, download, or update. Anyone who can use a web browser can use Take11. If you have a web-enabled mobile phone, you can access Take11 remotely, such as from your local dvd store. To add to your collection, you input just three or four key terms, and Take11 will fill in many details: actors, director, studio, running time—even a cover image. You can then add your own tags, comments, and ratings. As the number of Take11 users grows, so will its database, and this will allow users to explore other collections and search for little known gems from the film industry.

Take11 has just been released for public beta-testing: the developers need users who will explore the site, test features, and give constructive feedback. Anyone who regularly watches videos at home should give Take11 a look.
